A beautiful character study in a sci-fi world. Five aliens get waylaid at a rest stop on a barren planet. There is nothing to do but wait while the officials fix the problem. There's food, gardens, little kid cuteness, stressful exchanges due to cultural biases, friendships made, agreements to disagree, and the beauty and challenges that come with being a sentient being connecting to other sentient beings while wishing you were somewhere else. This is the 4th in the Wayfarer series, but it can be read as a stand alone if you don't mind not understanding a reference here and there.
Moderate: Medical trauma

SO FRICKIN' CUTE! As is the usual case with Becky Chambers' books, we follow a cast of disparate characters just being amazing and well characterized and lovable and SQUEE. In this case, we follow a few characters we have seen previously, as well as some new ones. It's so fun to see Easter eggs from previous books, and to watch as the characters interact in a more low-pressure environment that's somehow still engaging and intense at points? Also, the SOCIAL COMMENTARY in this book is 🔥🔥🔥. Go off, Becky Chambers, go off. I listened to this on audio, as I have the rest of the series. Ideal way to consume, 10/10 would recommend.Â
