It's a little bit heard to empathize with the heroine who faints at every opportunity, nevertheless I enjoyed the book. Sand was a feminist, before such labels existed, at a time when women were legally nothing but the property of their men. This was her first novel alone.
Indiana is a young girl, married off to an unappealing older man, who falls in love with a cad (to put it briefly). A nice twist at the end, and we do hope Indiana has gotten over her swooning habit.

Take that Jane Austen! Sand writes women with flaws and balls. Indiana's a sick virgin wimp at times, but then again she makes a couple of sea voyages, risks her reputation, and endures domestic violence. The central device is a love triangle - but this tired soap opera shtick is reinvigorated by Sand. I couldn't stop screaming at Indiana, booing Raymon and even pounding my feet on the couch at times. I highly recommend this book for lovers of George Eliot, Henry James and the Bronte sisters.
