The Lady in the Lake by Raymond Chandler

Chandler's Philip Marlowe is the ultimate world weary detective, here conveyed via a serpentine plot. Almost poetic descriptions and deft characterizations lift this above the genre Chandler helped create. All Chandler is good, this sets about middle of the pack for his writing. The Long Goodbye being my favorite. A Los Angeles location of swank pads of the wealthy and seedy hotels where the rich rendezvous with their dark appetites and the long dark streets usually lead into the hills above LA...away from the lights and the police and often morality. A missing wife leads to another missing wife that may be linked or simply not what they seem. Who we are is often not limited to the name we carry.

I ought to of thought of it myself. But if I had, it would be one of those ideas a fellow would throw away almost as quick as he thought of it. It would look too kind of far-fetched.

The language in this takes a while to get used to, and that is coming from someone who previously studied 19th-century texts. An overall enjoyable read but I figured out the twist about 1/3 of the way through.

A classic Noir story, with a good few twists to keep you guessing along the way

Marlowe busts a few cops' noses, reads the guilt in big brutes' eyes, and tosses away the pistols of diminutive blondes, all within 24 hours. A really enjoyable read.
