It's a good book.
Imaginative and extensive worldbuilding.
But, I have to say that about halfway through the story lost me a bit. I felt that there was too much going on, and the sudden timetravel plot near the end felt a bit out of left field for me. I felt a bit meh about the main characters and their romance.

The way things ended, I am curious to see where things go in the Kingdom in the next book.

The Sea of Zemira is the first book in the Zemria Chronicles centered around a crew of pirates fighting to uncover treasure and truths in their world ruled by a corrupt king.

The storyline was easy to follow for an intense magic system. The problem was the elements that made up the plot needed to flow together. This is primarily due to the head-hoping from paragraph to paragraph without notice. Another issue with the plot was that the scenes of conflict and struggle were always seamlessly resolved on the same page.

I did enjoy all the characters, and their personalities felt unique. Though I do not have a problem with it, this book is an instant-love romance.

The summary of this book pulled me in immediately, but sadly, it fell just a tad flat for me.

This book was…not great. It had potential, and the ideas were there, but unfortunately it was fleshed out with characters you didn’t really care about, situations that didn’t make sense, and honestly kind of a crappy MMC. His reactions to things are generally shitty in the moment, which he instantaneously regrets; how about…NOT reacting like a mean child? The FMC was more interesting, but she definitely didn’t reach her full potential as written. They’re also in love in about 15 minutes, which, come on.

The writing was pretty cheesy as well. It was like this author read the worst pirate story with the most stereotypically “pirate” language ever written and was like “hold my rum.” Every “ahoy,” “matey,” and “me hearties” had me rolling my eyes.

Also, I know I’m not the first one to mention this, but the pirate nicknames thing was such a waste of time and super cheesy. They don’t even go by the nicknames 99% of the time! Again, this goes back to the author needing to fit in every stereotypical pirate thing into this book (if you’re worried that she didn’t fit in walking the plank, worry not—that’s there too.)

The most interesting character (who doesn’t even become interesting til the last 1/4 of the book) is Elijah. I see that there is a second book in the series that focuses on him, but honestly I can’t inflict this kind of writing on myself again.

I am hooked on this series and can’t get enough of the romance. The fantasy elements are excellent, more please!

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Do you like Pirates and Sirens? This is a romantic story of a Siren that comes into her own power after joining a crew of pirates.
