TL;DR "I am everything and everything is I."
Or as Paglia put it: "Dionysus' polymorphous perversity breaks down Apollonian categorization and hierarchy."

It is mainly the subject matter that kept me from enjoying these poems. With some exceptions, his life experiences and thoughts don't make my heart sing with him.

i only read song of myself and i sing the body electric but i loved how celebratory they were of life and the human body. he was reveling in the simplest of pleasures, like a blade of grass or a lover's touch, but also so appreciative of the sublime

Although it took me longer to read, this was the most beautiful poetry book I’ve ever read. It helps you fall in love with everything around you and shows how much beauty there is in the world, not hidden but rather, in plain sight.

I love Walt Whitman. I am always reminded why he is my favourite poet and why he influences me in the way that he does - I can only hope to one day write as delicately as he does. He is truly a poet who has changed my life irrevocably, no doubt I will still be reading Leaves of Grass when I take my final draw of breath. I cannot say that everyone should read him, though I want to greatly, as I fear that poetry is one of those things that must speak to you - I can recommend a thousand poems, and of those only one may catch your heart. Nevertheless, the poems of Walty Waltzer are astounding, and act as proverbs, at least to me and my life. I will never not quote "I am large; I contain multitudes" or "the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse", and I will never not tear up at the overwhelming variety of emotions that is instilled within me when I see those words written on any medium. There is something so magical about the poems in Leaves of Grass and I cannot explain it beyond my admiration for the poet and his craft.

He does have a way with words. But I don't love his poetry.
