This is basically a story about the lifecycle of a wood duck. The hen and drake mate, and the hen lays eggs in a hole in a tree. The hen stays nests on the eggs for about 30 days, and then they hatch. The ducklings crawl to the hole and jump into the water. Six of the 8 survive, grow into adults, and then fly south for the winter. In the spring another hen and drake appear.

The book is very realistic and provides a good description of the life of a wood duck. I thought that the book was pretty good. It is not super colorful, but the illustrations are still nice.

A couple of the ducklings are eaten by predators, so I'm not sure that I would use this book with younger children. It could be used when discussing life cycles and embryonic development.
