I loved these three stories. Put me in the Christmas spirit and a sweet reminisce about a southern Christmas.

Not quite the jolly festive read I was looking for but still a beautiful and devastating selection of short stories.

A wonderful holiday collection of three short stories about Capote's Alabama childhood.
My favorite is the first, A Christmas Memory, which recounts the last Christmas that Capote, at age eight, spent with his beloved elderly cousin Sook.
These were a joy to read, and I will certainly read them again. In fact, I need to read much more Capote altogether.

When I think of Capote I think of his stylish over the top prose like [b:Breakfast at Tiffany's|251688|Breakfast at Tiffany's|Truman Capote|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1477015353l/251688._SY75_.jpg|2518209] and [b:In Cold Blood|168642|In Cold Blood|Truman Capote|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1424931136l/168642._SY75_.jpg|1940709]. In Cold Blood he actually inserts himself in a true crime case, and gives it flair that makes a new genre (literary nonfiction). I found these stories to be more subtle and reminds me of what I think Capote was like as a child growing in Alabama. This collection of short stories is a great brief look at Capote's writing style. This reminds me, I need to read more Capote and his peers.

This collection of three short stories was bittersweet. So many fond memories intermixed with sad ones. I really enjoyed A Christmas Memory. It’s the story of Capote as a 7 year old living with relatives one Christmas in rural Alabama. Capote’s relationship with “his friend”, a 60-something cousin, and their traditions were so special. This story made me smile.

One Christmas was sad but provided a lot of insight into A Christmas Memory. It gave a glimpse into the rocky childhood Capote had and how he came to live with his Alabama relatives.

The Thanksgiving Visitor was a nice story but not as good as A Christmas Memory. It recounts a Thanksgiving Capote spent with his relatives in rural Alabama and his difficulties with a local bully.

I’ve never read Capote before. I enjoyed his writing and I’m interested in reading his novels now.
