"Is it true that human beings are fundamentally cruel? Is the experience of cruelty the only thing we share as a species? Is the dignity that we cling to nothing but self-delusion, masking from ourselves the single truth: that each one of us is capable of being reduced to an insect, a ravening beast, a lump of meat? To be degraded, slaughtered - is this the essential of humankind, one which history has confirmed as inevitable?"

Beautiful prose but harrowing. This took me two months to finish. I intentionally spaced out my reading of this book because it dealt with a deeply upsetting subject matter on political violence and its aftereffects. Please check trigger warnings before reading this book.聽

"Ever since the uprising began I'd felt something coursing through me, as overwhelming as any army. Conscience. The most terrifying thing in the world".

S贸lo por poner un ejemplo de muchos, 驴por qu茅 la traductora en un momento puso "get out a cigarette" en vez de "take out a cigarette" o "take a cigarette out of the bag". Se trata de cosas as铆 que constantemente me sacaban de la historia, me distra铆an y me irritaban.

"There was something infinitely noble about how his body still bore the traces of Hands that had touched ir, a tangible record of having been cared for, been valued, that made me envious and sad".

"I don't have a map for whatever world lies beyond death. I don't know whether there too there are meetings and partings, whether we still have faces and voices, hearts with the capacity for joy as well as sorrow".

A harrowing account of the Gwangju Massacre from a cast of characters all connected by the death one young boy - Human Acts by Han Kang will tear your heart apart. Despite the horrific content of this story, I found Kang鈥檚 descriptive writing to be beautiful and unique. Her descriptions of death and death-adjacent experiences is like none other I鈥檝e read before.聽
