Just… no words can cover how heart shattering, brave, and important Yeonmi’s story is. She risks so much by speaking out about her story, but her perseverance and strength to have done all that she needed to survive and to continue to advocate for others through telling these traumatic stories is one of the rarest forms of heroism. For modern times, this story is equal in importance and impact to “Night” by Elie Wiesel and similar works, in my opinion.
I don’t have much else to say except that, although this book is heavy and horrifying and difficult to read, it is also extremely important to read. I know that there will be content triggers for some readers, but Yeonmi’s story is so well told and her insight into life and human rights is something that everyone should hear. I also think that this story is one of the most glaring forms of me realizing how much I take/have taken for granted about my life that I have ever encountered. For that, I encourage others to learn about and open our minds and hearts to what is occurring in our neighboring countries so that we can help Yeonmi in her fight for awareness and advocacy.

Looking to gain some perspective during these strange and horrible times of COVID? Looking to forget yourself and your troubles for a moment? Looking for how to find meaning in suffering? This book is for you!

The writing is simple, but the depth is profound.

Today I finished the book "In Order to Live" by Yeonmi Park. This book was an emotional yet strong view into the world of a North Korean defector escaping from a life most of us can't even fathom. I've never known much about the history of life in North Korea. This book is not written by someone that is a literary master and spun their story, but is the true hard story of her life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as or highlighted the perseverance of the human mind through the darkness. It is a heavy read, but I highly recommend.

I've been wanting to read something about North Korea for a while and this didn't disappoint. Yeonmi is the same age as me, which made it all the more real to compare what I was up to at her age. It's hard to believe her story is true. Also that she managed to survive & make it to South Korea. It's a great insight into how hard it is to escape and where she lived there was only a river separating her from China. It was very interesting to hear about how life was in North Korea and the mindset of people.
