I was so pleasantly surprised by the first volume of One Piece. I wasn't sure what to expect but as someone who loves pirate stories, I went in with an open mind. Eiichiro Oda does a fantastic job of making you instantly care about the characters through the simple work of giving them an important task or goal that they believe in. I'm excited to see where this story goes next and to get introduced to more of the characters. I can see this quickly becoming a favorite series.
Moderate: Bullying and Violence
Minor: Fatphobia

It was so interesting and so disturbing all at the same time. The chaos of the plot combined with the chaos of the anime art style made this manga mesmerizing to read. Luffy’s powers are creepy, and while they’re very useful, they’re rather disgusting to look at, but I guess that still made it a good spectacle if nothing else. I loved Zolo, his ultimate escape, and their toppling of Captain Morgan and his horse’s ass of a son. It was so satisfying. I really didn’t care for Luffy or Koby though, beyond their noble character motivations. I wasn’t enchanted enough to keep going with this series or to pick up the anime, but it was a wonderful standalone piece even if so. It was more graphic than I expected it to be, also, but I think I’m just not used to that yet because this was only my second manga. Basically, I would read it again, but it was off-putting enough that I wouldn’t make an effort to go on with the series, despite its incredible spectacle.
Graphic: Bullying, Child abuse, Death, Emotional abuse, Gore, Gun violence, Sexism, Torture, Toxic relationship, Violence, Blood, Medical content, Kidnapping, Medical trauma, and Murder
Minor: Self harm and Suicide

“One day I will find a crew that is as strong as yours!! And then I’ll find the world’s biggest treasure. And become King Of The Pirates. “
This is the beginning of a massive saga - the first volume of 90 currently published. I've been meaning to get involved for a while, but it is always so daunting to see what is ahead.
I really enjoyed the introduction to our main character Luffy D. Monkey. It was lighthearted and full of misunderstandings. In typical Luffy fashion, he eats something he should not have and accidentally gets superpowers.
It was great to see his power levels when just starting out because we know that he gets much stronger quite quickly. At this moment, he is just a kid with big dreams.
We get introduced to pirates early on - through Red-Haired Shanks - the inspiration for Luffy to become a pirate. And we also experience a touch of the emotional turmoil that Oda can deliver through his story.
For the rest of the volume, we follow Luffy as he goes off to become a pirate and all the misadventures that follow. However, now he has his first nakama - friend to join his crew.

Fun and adventurous, this budding crew of pirates keeps readers engaged with silly antics and heartwarming friendships. This first volume includes the first encounters between Luffy, Zoro (it is confirmed by the author as Zoro, but written as Zolo in the American translation), and Nami.
