kelly quindlen you absolute menace. i knew this book was gonna hit diff and it did. is this what u mfs mean when you talk about how a little life literally destroyed you but also is ur fav? yea i get it now
ill say i didnt love the climax it felt a little too cheese for me michelle’s character in general felt too 2d villain and i wish she had more motivation for all the absolute treachery she induced on my favs
"Right. Sometimes I think God reacted the way he did because he was so, so anguished that Adam and Eve hated something about themselves. They didn't realize how beautiful they were in the Garden. They didn't realize how perfect they were in their love. When their eyes were opened-when they saw that they were naked —they felt as if they had to cover themselves. They thought what God had made was shameful and embarrassing and wrong. Can you imagine how that made God feel? How his heart must have ached to see them denying their beauty, their humanity, in front of him like that? It's the most heartrending part of the story."

The amount of times I need to stop and cry… Felt so seen by this book. Beautifully written, though the religious imagery was a little too heavy handed for me

This hit so close to home, it was basically in my garage. It brought up so many emotions, and ideas that have changed how I think. I loved it, but it was HEAVY, especially as a queer Christian.

I truly don’t know why it took me so long to finally pick up this book but omg it was beautiful 🥺 like truly heartbreaking but still beautiful and hopeful! This book is about so much but the heart of the story is love. Finding love, accepting love in all its forms, and letting yourself love. While the main storyline was Hannah & Baker coming to terms with their feelings for each other and learning to reconcile those feelings with everything that they’ve been told love should be by the church and the world, it was also about platonic, familial, and self love. Every type of love is important and learning that is so crucial. And while these characters were messy and complicated, it was so easy to root for them all every step of the way!

I have mixed feelings about this one… first, I found the level of wealth & privilege these kids seem to have entirely unrelatable, but that doesn’t mean their environment isn’t also oppressive to difference.  Second, the conversations about religion & morality of love, political events, etc is an important one for many and helped me understand one of my closeted saying partners better at the same time making me (unashamed California-raised) profoundly uncomfortable.  It also felt unnecessarily sad/dramatic, but there’s lots of dramatic straight romance (also which I don’t love) so I think that’s just personal preference.

(SMALL SPOILER SKIP IF HAVENT READ:)
But mainly- THE APOLOGY?! WHAT DOES SHE HAVE TO APOLOGIZE TO C FOR!? And why is she suddenly so wise and forgiving when he admits all the fucked up stuff he ignored/put B through? She’s understandably protective the whole time and then, is suddenly unphased?!
