4.5

4.5 stars rounded up to 5. I really liked it, though not as much as The Empress of Salt and Fortune. Probably because it's so short, and I really wanted more.

I can appreciate it but it didn’t hold up to the first book for me. I’m not really a fan of fable-esque stories, and this one is very much that. I like that it brings up the topic of who’s writing history and if they’re really depicting it as it happened, I would’ve liked if it leaned a bit more into that. It was very meh for me overall.

I’m also a bit curious about the ‘romance’ in the book, because to me it felt very typical of fable-esque love stories that are actually pretty toxic from a modern pov, so I wasn’t thinking of it as a romance we were supposed to root for exactly but it seems like some other reviewers felt differently.. because the romance was very toxic both from the human’s and tiger’s povs (stalking, not helping unless they get something out of it, being generally aggressive, etc.).

This is the second in a series of stories following the cleric Chih as they travel around collecting stories to write down and save for future generations. As Chih and their mammoth riding guide Si-yu are travelling up the mountain they are ambushed by 3 tigers. The tigers can shift into human form and they learn that they are sisters. The tigers hold off on eating them though long enough to hear Chihs version of a story about one of the great tigers Ho Thi Thao and her scholar lover Dieu. Chih now being tasked with trying to keep the tiger sisters from eating them all by the story they are telling while also editing the story to the true version the tiger sisters wish to tell.
It was a good story, I enjoyed reading it. The writing was again wonderful and the story so unique and interesting. I will say I enjoyed the Empress of Salt and Fortune just a bit more than this one but it's still a great story.

I enjoyed this one much more than the previous book. Nghi Vo's writing is once again breath-taking and each time I love the narrator more as well as the morally grey, but passionate, sapphics that exist in their stories.
