DNF review: The writing style isn't for me and I was bored, confused and honestly kind of annoyed for the whole 67 that I read.

2° opportunity and finished review:
This book was really hard to get into- the writing is very metaphoric and? at the same time, kind of childish/immature and I honestly didn't knew what was happening in the first 100 pages or so. Some situations also didn't make much sense considering the character's age. The chapters were SO LONG and maybe it was too slow-paced for me. However, these characters are vibrant- they have so much life, personality and depth. The story is good (with some ups and downs), but it's definitely the characters that stand out in this book. I was also very satisfied with the ending, which definitely played a big part on my overall positive review.

Don't think I'll ever understand the hype about this book, it was touted as good gay representation but the book basically ignored Noah and when they did focus on him it was a very...."after school special" idea of LGBT+ teens. Also
Oscar was...a lot and often felt like a mash of fan fiction tropes rather than a real character. Plus the whole college student/high schooler relationship thing is...really bad

(Self-portrait: Person feeling ALL of the emotions reading a book)
I acquired this book on a whim when I saw it in my audible suggestions and liked the name and cover - and I'm so glad I found it! I've never read/listened to a book stringing words together like this. The stories' secrets are thrilling and heartbreaking, full of loss and love. For me the metaphorical language really worked and as somebody who also paints in their head, I looooved Noahs POV. I highly recomment the audiobook read by Julia Whelan and Jesse Bernstein!

Third time reading this book, third time feeling like it's such an easy 5 star rating. <3

These characters feel so lived-in and real to me, and every time I get SO invested in what is going on with them.

The plot keeps my interest throughout, adding layers to the complex dynamics between Noah and Jude and their entire family, and then just hitting me right in my heart several times. I love it so much.

Jandy Nelson's writing style is forever one of my all-time favorites. The brilliant metaphors full of whimsy, humor, wit, and intense feeling breathe new life into me every time. I have countless lines tabbed as favorites, too many to all put into my book quote journal because I'd basically just be putting this entire book in there.

2023: I love the prose so much but the
age gap stuff, especially after the stuff with Zephyr, especially after Oscar is the one who talks about their ages and then Jude is the one who initiates it... extremely upsetting
