This is absolutely one of my new favorite books of all time. I literally don't have the words to describe it but I loved this book and these characters so deeply. I genuinely feel like Jandy Nelson picked thoughts and feelings out of my brain/heart and wrote them out on paper. The characters felt things in such depth which felt so personal. Both Noah and Jude care so much about one another, about their parents, and about other loved ones, and even when they struggle to vocalize those feelings they come out through their art, which is beautiful. I loved the descriptions of colors, and art, and heavy hearts. All of it was perfect and even when I hated the characters actions, I still loved them. This book covered such a wide array of challenges and struggles that we all deal with and covered them through this coming of age story. The descriptions around grief and loss, assault, feeling left behind by loved ones, falling in love with your first love, all of these things were so well done. I kept annotating that I just wanted to exist along with these characters because Ioved them and their story so much. Again, this is a new all time favorite. I loved it so much and even in all my rambles, I can't accurately capture why but this is my best effort to do so!

Don't think I'll ever understand the hype about this book, it was touted as good gay representation but the book basically ignored Noah and when they did focus on him it was a very...."after school special" idea of LGBT+ teens. Also
Oscar was...a lot and often felt like a mash of fan fiction tropes rather than a real character. Plus the whole college student/high schooler relationship thing is...really bad

i Will go back and finish this book at some point but the misogyny and the blossoming adult/minor relationship is just too uncomfortable to me

(Self-portrait: Person feeling ALL of the emotions reading a book)
I acquired this book on a whim when I saw it in my audible suggestions and liked the name and cover - and I'm so glad I found it! I've never read/listened to a book stringing words together like this. The stories' secrets are thrilling and heartbreaking, full of loss and love. For me the metaphorical language really worked and as somebody who also paints in their head, I looooved Noahs POV. I highly recomment the audiobook read by Julia Whelan and Jesse Bernstein!

ok mm. my original review was Very Positive but upon rereading this has some issues, so docking like 2 stars because some things were quite difficult to read (in a bad way) but i still enjoyed the general themes of the story and the emotional effect it has on me. rating stuff is hard

2023: I love the prose so much but the
age gap stuff, especially after the stuff with Zephyr, especially after Oscar is the one who talks about their ages and then Jude is the one who initiates it... extremely upsetting
