The story was told by a set of teenage girl/boy twins, Jude and Noah. They once had a very close relationship and often thought of themselves as NoahandJude. A multitude of events and misunderstandings put them at odds with each other and with whom they thought they were as people. Neither knew how to put their broken world back together, but they knew they needed to set things right to find their way back to each other.

Wow! That was good. Jandy Nelson did a very good job of writing teen angst and the feeling of the world being out of balance. I loved how Noah’s creativity was described as an ecstatic impulse. I would love to know what it would be like to have that feeling. I related a lot to Jude’s character, a teen wondering how to navigate boys, friends, and acting one way, but feeling another. Guillermo and Oscar were wonderful additions to the story and played their parts well. I could fully imagine what they looked like and how they reacted. There were times when I knew what was going to happen and hoped it didn’t and others when the story caught me completely by surprise. I loved that.

This book is an interesting study of a close relationship between siblings breaking down and coming back together — and luckily we get to see both of their perspectives in this!!

If there was any one book I wish everyone in the universe could have the privilege of experiencing, it would be this one. So many of the books I consider my favorite are very specific to me and my hopelessly romantic tastes. This one is very different; genuinely a work of art. I have never read a book so mind-altering. I am not an artist, not particularly superstitious, not as imaginative as Noah and Jude. Yet, every description of their world became visceral to me. I need 25 lifetimes to fully consider the impact this book has had on my life. There’s my life before I’ll give you the sun and my life after it! I think I need to buy a copy of this book so I can have it with me for the rest of my life. I knew I was smart to drop everything and read this book after I saw Alice oseman’s goodreads review of it :)

It’s a gorgeously written book, nevertheless it’s unique. I find the writing strangely similar to my own pattern of thinking, with references and meaningful but weird descriptions. The family dynamics  are unlike anything I’ve read and it absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful.
