I had read an essay or two by Judith Butler for Gender Studies classes in the past, so I thought I’d give their seminal text on gender a try. It was… very above my reading level 😅 While I did get a lot out of it—many highlights and complex ideas—I do think I would have benefited from having a background in philosophy. A lot of this book went over my head due to the scholarly writing style and philosophical references. But, even though I didn’t agree with everything I *did* understand, I’m still glad I took a crack at it—we all need a challenge every now and then! It is very humbling.

Definitely gave me a lot to think about. This is my first time reading the book all the way through, as opposed to reading excerpts. Some parts, such as the third chapter, were much better than others. It's hard to give a pat, succinct review of this. I'll need to reflect more.
Moderate: Homophobia, Misogyny, Sexism, Transphobia, and Lesbophobia
Minor: Incest, Pedophilia, Suicide, and Excrement
