Verity who was a strong woman in the first book has turned into a doormat here who takes on the guilt and blame of everything and everyone when she shouldn't. Her husband Sydney turns out to be the biggest chauvinistic asshole ever. And Verity just takes it and rationalizes everything....I would have dumped him and at this point in time, she wouldn't have been blamed for doing so. The mystery plot in this book is slim and takes a back seat to the problems of Verity and Sydney which shouldn't have taken up this much time. I don't think I'll read the next book if it has Sydney in it or Verity keeps on with the self-blaming and doormat behavior.

A very enjoyable second in the series! I loved that in this one we got to see more of the impressive field agent that Verity had become during the war, whereas in the first book we heard about it more than saw evidence of it. The first book had more of the cozy feel of a game of Clue, but this book has a mystery that requires them to go on a quest, solving the mystery only if they can manage to puzzle the clues out and follow the trail of bread crumbs.
Verity and Sidney have been having a bit of a rocky time together, trying to resume and resurrect their marriage. Throughout the course of the book, they begin to share some of the mysteries of their time apart. Sidney begins to share some of the horrors that are weighing on him from his time in the war and Verity begins to share the risky assignments she undertook during her time as an agent. And the result is a growing understanding as to how the other has changed during their time apart.
I didn't much care for Sidney in the first book, and to be frank, I still don't like him overly much. But i do have a better understanding now for him as a character and why he behaved the way he did. I can now feel more of a support for Verity in giving her marriage with him another try.
Looking forward to a third book in this series very much!

Skimmed most of the info dumps... I get they'd be useful for anyone who has never, ever read any books on this time period (fiction or non-fiction) but it's definitely repetition for anyone else.

The plot was all right, though!
