Light and fun. It's a story that will seem new to kids, but old hat to adults. Well written and entertaining.

Two boys and two girls gain the rare ability to call animals to them at a rite of passage ceremony. Instead of calling normal animals, they call four of the great beasts of legend. Each handles the news in s different way and are not sure what to make of their new abilities or allies. Adventure is ahead as wars begin. An overwhelming evil is trying to take over the world and these four are charged with stopping it.

LIBRARIAN REVIEW:
Any school library would benefit from this series. Ages 8+, younger as a read aloud. Not much curriculum content, but wonderful jumping off point for all sorts of social discussions.

I liked this book a lot. If your hesitant about reading this because of the "the animal is with you and in your spirit" thingy I wouldn't worry about it. I thought that part was pretty cool actually.
My main problem with the book is in the beginning there were so many new names of things that were really hard to pronounce and they all had x's in them. They pretty much had like two new complicated words in each sentence. Although it did get much better as it went on and it didn't have to explain as much stuff.
My reviews are pretty weird but overall I liked this book and I thought it was very entertaining and I recommend it for a fun middle grade fantasy.

Conor, Rollan, Meilin, and Abeke are four adolescents who manage to summon spirit animals to their sides during the Nectar rituals of their regions. Everyone is beyond startled that they manage to summon Briggan, Essix, Jhi, and Uraza of the legendary Great Beasts, a feat which is unheard of. The Greencloaks successfully manage to recruit Conor and Meilin for their forces and have Rollan train with them, though he will not take their vows after being tricked by an imposter/ ex-Greencloak. Abeke, meanwhile is being trained by traitors to the Greencloaks and is non the wiser that this put her very life in danger. Conor is by far my favorite of the four, as he is a shepherd's son who is working very hard to protect his family. He also has already formed a great bond with Briggan, and I really love their dynamic. I really want Meilin to be more of the kick-butt warrior she seems to be and less of a whiner about not getting her way.

Spirit Animals is a very popular series of books written by several different authors. This is book one. I didn't really care for it, but I think that's because it was the first book and a lot of the book is introducing the characters in the series. I think if I read the rest of the series I will enjoy it more. Fantasy lovers seem to really enjoy this series.

This will be a fantastic series for middle grade kids. This one does a great job introducing the characters. That and Brandon Mull is one of my favorite authors.

I look forward to where the other authors will take the story. Maggie Striefvater, also one of my favorite authors, is set to write the next one due out in January 2014.
