I loved the characters independently, and I really enjoyed the look into that generational trauma that parents can pass to their kids and how the kids deal with that. I also liked the look into becoming a doctor that this book led you through. What I wasn't a big fan of was the relationship between the main characters. I really struggled to feel like they were healthy for each other, or that either were in a healthy mindset for a good relationship. This was sort of included in the plot - but I was never sure if I wanted to root for or against them.

Ok. I thought the pace of the plot was good and the story was interesting and the chemistry was good. But I'm stuck on the way that there were so many all-or-nothing relationship conflicts (protagonist cutting off her parents, bestie icing protagonist out, abrupt break ups with the love interest) despite the misunderstandings and harms being relatively small? And this contrasted with the fact that the love interest was full of red flags that were all explained away as him taking commitment TOO seriously. I loved the characters, I liked the book, but I think I didn't fully trust the emotional reactions and behaviour of the characters. It felt kind of unnatural.

I enjoyed the plot with the FMC being in her 3rd year of med school and waiting to be matched for residency. I liked how the author brought in systemic issues within race for patients that has an impact on how they are treated and cared.

I struggled with the romance in this book because both of the MCs are in their early 20s and act like it. Nothing wrong with that but with the complex issues they were going through it was a little frustrating.

I liked this book. I read it in one night and enjoyed myself. There were some things overall that bugged me but I had a good time and in no way regret my time spent with it.

The MC was a bit of a chore. I wish she had some more layers because she would have bugged the hell out of me if she were my friend. The ML was a little irksome, too. And oy the communication.

The side characters were interesting but I don't think I agree that I wanted more of them or her family.  I think the book was honestly just a bit too chunky and cutting down the romance alone would have been enough. I don't mind drama, I don't mind the ups and downs, but this one was just a bit like "come on already we get it - you can't talk to each other."
Also why did he say he didn't see her "like that" if he definitely did? Just because of his current gf? It was odd.

My final peeve about this book is the footnotes. I kind of get that it's supposed to be like a medical textbook but it was too much and it was distracting. I get that there were terms to teach but there are ways to make it more approachable without them. I also couldn't tell if they were written in the POV of the author or the MC for far too long.

I'm looking forward to more from this author - I think for a first this was a strong start.
