This is a lovely look at being a mixed kid, and navigating all those awkward and confusing interactions middle school brings, and being an adoptee.
The idea that half of you is heritage and half is choice is such an important sentiment to reinforce, no matter your age. Even as an older mixed individual, that was something I needed to hear. I totally relate to David's dad feeling like he wasn't Brazilian "enough" to claim that part of himself.
And depicting a range of what bullying can look like is excellent. I can't wait to put this into kids' hands.

Would highly recommend You Only Live Once David Bravo to anyone! it made me laugh out loud so many times and cry so hard too but in the best way. It was an interesting take on time travel/Groundhog Day kind of story with twists and turns that are unexpected. I am looking forward to reading more by Mark Oshiro in the future after reading this.

I'm so happy to have read a book by Oshiro! Their delivery on this middle grade rainbow winner was superb. (And I learned they are are close friends with Sarah Gailey!)
As I began reading this book I told my daughter the details of the plot one night while putting her to bed. I came to the point I was in the book and paused. She asked "Well, what happens next?!" I told her that's where I was in the book. "No! Go finish reading it and then come tell me!" A week later she came home from school with a copy of the book from the library. (THANK YOU PUBLIC SCHOOL LIBRARY (in a very red state) FOR HAVING THIS BOOK!)
The story was written for middle grade kids, and Oshiro does a great job of writing a time travel story in an interesting way that isn't overly convoluted but still detailed and complex. I really liked that aspect and appreciated how they wrote in a way that I knew kids would be drawn to.
I am looking forward to reading Oshiro's collaboration with Rick Riordan on the Nico DiAngelo story from the Percy Jackson series as well as some of Oshiro's highly acclaimed books.

A captivating, fast-paced middle grade sci-fi with themes of first (queer) crushes, adoption, and family. The endearing characters, time travel adventures, and quirky sidekicks give the story wide appeal, while the specifics of the main character's journeys in adoption and queer identity will make this an especially meaningful read for some kids. Either way, it's a lovable, fun-filled page-turner that isn't easy to put down.
