This is delightful fun! There isn’t a bunch of substance here, but what it lacks there it makes up for in light narration. I throughly enjoyed the narrator here and found him quite cheeky! As this is a book in prose I can recommend the audiobook as it’s delightful. Found out a famous opera is based on this and now I know what I’m going to watch tomorrow on YouTube! Can’t wait to see how it’s done!!

It took a couple of chapters for me to get into, most likely because I'm not used to reading verse narrative, but by the end, I was blown away by this. It's a novel that forces you to read aloud, such is the rhythmic intoxication. It skips along at quite a pace. The writing is sublime and the story is perfectly executed. I expect the translations make a big difference. I read Johnston, which worked well for me.

Honestly found it pretty hard to follow at first but eventually I started to follow the plot and definitely enjoyed the story. Im not really into poetry but there where definitely some sections where I almost felt mesmerized by the words and the rhymes. Unfortunately this was constantly broken up by sections that felt pretty clunky and not fluid but that may have just been cause of the Russian to English translation.

The way Pushkin talks directly to the reader and has so many visual details reminds me of Dickens. I liked this very much.
