While this didn't make me want to become an ultramarathoner or a vegan, it was fascinating to read about Jurek's life and find out what DOES make someone want to do this. He faced his ups and downs before and during his racing years, and he's very frank about all of it.
One thing I will say is that while he discusses his injuries, he doesn't really go into some of the pain his regular training brings about (and at more miles a day than the average runner hits in 5 days, there must have been SOME). Still, fascinating read, some approachable recipes (even for non-vegans).

I loved this biography of Scott Jurek's ultramarathon career. He goes race by race through his teen and adult life as he morphs into a pure whole foods vegan and champion who defies the "you need meat to be an athlete" way of thinking. There's lot of recipes in the book for energy-giving food and snacks including portable racing snacks! Awesome book for runners, veggies and anyone who likes a good underdog story.

Talk about a book that will inspire you!!! This one almost made me want to become a vegan...and run ultramarathons. But I'm not crazy! Not only did the subject matter appeal to me (food and running, which is clearly stated in the title), but it always kept my interest. He dabbles in stories of his childhood and past relationships, and he also includes vegan recipes of foods that sound delicious! A definite must read for those who are interested in how diet affects performance.

Listened to this while running. Great listen. It’s interspersed chapters of him talking about life, running, relationships, motivation, illness, etc. woven in between vegan recipes. 

Great to listen to while running, maybe wouldn’t have read if not running. 

I loved it all, but I really liked the parts where he talked through a race in an action type of way. It read more like a race-focused YouTube video for those chapters which are my favorite. So a little more of that would have been perfect for me personally.

A pleasant enough book to read. Still not sure why so many ultra runners are vegan or vegetarian. Not healthy. Also not healthy to be an ultra runner when it’s clear it’s cope + a way to escape. Regardless, impressive feats of physicality.

Part memoir, part recipe book, this is not for someone new to either ultrarunning or health-conscious eating. Lots of details are skipped in preference to the greater whole: that someone learning a strong work ethic from an old-fashioned (but slightly broken) household can help when putting in the long hours required to run ultramarathons at record-setting pace. It is a bit inspirational, and partly pulling the heartstrings, but nothing hugely suspenseful (except the occasional discussion of a race where he plays up his injuries, dehydration, and fatigue before quickly [and sometimes "magically"] recovering strength and finishing with a new record. AGAIN).

I do recommend it for people interested in trail running or just wanting to know more about this very famous runner (in this small corner of the running community). I also enjoyed the recipes at the end of each chapter and plan to use a few as running fuel, especially the rice balls.

I feel like the title is a bit misleading. This dude started running in like middle school and went longer and longer and made friends with ultra marathoners so he started doing them. So it wasn't ever like a huge leap like the title suggests. But it was definitely worth a read, especially if your into or getting into running.
