I promised myself I'd quit after volume one if there was no point. I think there is a point, even if I can't put my finger on it.

On the other hand, this book would be the result if my brother in law lay on a shrink's couch for the rest of eternity and I taped the conversation.

Some interesting musings on love and memory and fantasy vs. reality. And some florid language. On to part 2!

beautifully depicts how love drives one to madness and suffering, as well as a sneaky narrator who stays unknown (also odette being gay was so iconic of proust ngl)

"Remembrance of a particular form is but regret for a particular moment; and houses, roads, avenues are as fugitive, alas, as the years."

Sparkling, romantic prose.

Listen I only read the Combray section but I'm gonna call it good bc that was 300 pages and all in French and it's not like Proust is some walk in the park this bitch is telling a story and then he remembers something else he's gotta tell you and then something else related to THAT and then another thing and next thing u know it's been 100 pages and he's still telling the same damn story.

The writing is good and I understand why ppl like it but a French person told me that French ppl only pretend to read the whole book and actually just quote the first line all the time, and the scene w the Madeleine.

"Longtemps, je me suis couché de bonne heure."

Anyway maybe I'll look into this book more when I have time but rn my prof has moved on, my class has moved on, we all must move on.

Very good, but extremely dense and difficult to read.
