This book is so amazing. I love it so much. My dad and grandmother are/were Panamanian and there are moments in the book that speak to me so much. Although we definitely had different circumstances, I felt her earnestness to go to college and do well in school, and straining to pick up what her mama was saying in Spanish. The moments with her grandmother teaching her the same skill she used for making money was just like my grandmother insisting that if I became a teacher, I would always have a job. Just like Veronica, I didn't understand the desire to see your grandchildren have such job security and just like Veronica, I eventually figured out how to use those skills to help me get by.

This book is so well-written and clear and beautiful, I read it in less than a day. Putting it down wasn't an option. Pick it up - it's worth it.

Read this ages ago because the author is a Simon's Rock alumna. I remember liking it, but not much else about it. It would be a good one to reread one of these days.
