Hello, yes, YALL ARE SLEEPING ON THIS BOOK! Alchemy, necromancers, and darkness. One of my favorites of the year, for sure. Also, the author was inspired by Fullmetal Alchemist SO if you enjoyed the anime/manga, then you’ll probably really like this!

I didn't love this. I went into this book knowing literally nothing about it. This was a cover/title buy for me. So everything was kind of a surprise. I liked the alchemy and the school. That was fun.. but I hated the necromancy. Oh I also didn't like the romance. It felt forced.

I like the idea behind this book. The plot in itself plus the twists and turns earns it a solid 3.

I had a few problems with this book though:

Something about the writing didn't flow well for me. The build up wasn't consistent. I also felt like there were a few holes in the story.

I felt like there was missed opportunity with the school that was created as well as some of the secondary characters.

The romance in this felt a little forced and unrequited.

I will likely read the 2nd, maybe it will just take some time I think.

The general vibe I got was like when you write a paper and get a C and your teacher gives you the opportunity to re-write it in order to earn an A or B. That's kind of how I feel. If this book was re-written and corrected it could easily be 4.5+

3.75/5 stars, round up

While I really liked it, it does have a slower build up than I would've liked. Nedra was a strong character, and she becomes more morally gray as the book goes on. Grey is a character I had a love-hate relationship. While I really like him in general, he didn't have much of a purpose in the book. I did like that his POV gave us some insight on the behind the scenes while Nedra is doing her thing. I hope he plays a bigger role in the sequel though, as here I would've liked more from him.

Oh my god. This was DARK. And it was AWESOME. Nedra is my favorite antiheroine. Also, can Grey stop referring to Nedra as “my Nedra?” 🙄 I NEED BOOK 2 NOW
