really great found family story with just enough tension to keep it interesting.

lots of interesting ethics and parallels to the real world in terms of religions, police brutality, xenophobia and more.

some of the ethical problems especially related to
medical autonomy of a character
are not handled in the best way, but overall pretty good

A wonderful and engaging scifi romp. Emotionally touching moments mixed with adventure and humor.

Loved this book just as much as the first time that I read it. As I already knew, Chambers excels in character development and exploration. I loved the Wayfarer crew and what each of them stood for, for example Jenks allowing for discussions about AI, and Sissix's culture opening up discussion about family, and having children raised by a community of people who are well suited to the role and have lots of experience, rather than one of two people.

I did read the ending of this when I was having a rough day, and I think because of this the ending sequence had a much more jarring impact on me than the last time I read it. I got very emotional, particularly seeing Ohan's deterioration and Jenks' grief, and how the crew all looked after one another.

I think the key reason this is such a successful book for me is the found family element, which is one of my favourite topics in literature (think The House in the Cerulean Sea, Wayward Children series).
