'A Stranger in the house' didn't have the most complicated of plots or big, flashy events but it had a constant progression and building tension that meant I couldn't put it down.

I disagree with other reviews stating that the characters were dull. They were a just normal couple, living a normal life until BOOM. For me, the tension came from the fact that they were normal and therefore the events could happen to anyone. Okay, the layers were peeled back to reveal secrets eventually, but the initial tension was because it was disruption of an everyday life. Not every fictional character needs to have a complicated life, backstory or history. Sometimes it works because they are 'dull'.

I really enjoyed it, and I'm already reading another by this author.

Another one sitting read for Shari Lapena, something about the writing just flows perfectly into itself.

I kinda guessed who did it right away but it was a bit entertaining to see that conclusion confirmed; even with how unlikable all the characters were.  The ambiguous ending though had me kinda annoyed.

2.5⭐️. This did not make the littles bit of sense. To me it felt that Lapena had ideas that she just put all together and then tried forcing them to make sense. Like I don’t understand why the police were so concerned that this woman was in the “bad” side of town just charge her with the crime and be done. Then to try to force her to be connected with the murder. I also don’t like the way that the other woman was depicted as crazy and obsessive. Overall I thought that this novel felt forced and not well thought out. And at times the plot felt very convenient.
