An okay read. Beautifully written but not as engaging as I had hoped.

All this book taught me is that Satan can get it.

L1|L3 English major university reading.
I got very interested into this book when reading it, seeing how Satan is now seen as someone bad when he only asked god for more power and equality. He never wanted to leave heaven nor wanting to fall and go from handsome to some creatures. As readers, we end up sympathising with him.
Milton's style is very pictorial, giving us a lot of description and details - leading to many illustrations.
It is a debate about life, our views on good and bad.

“The mind is its own place, and in itself can make a heaven of hell, a hell of heaven..”

I really enjoyed the first three books of this poem. I thought they were very well done and I really found myself sympathizing with Satan. His speech in Book 4, lines 93-109 really resonated with me.
...and then we get to the garden. I hated Eve from the beginning. She was overly submissive and while I realize this book was written a long time ago when that would be more socially acceptable, that still made me very angry. I could not get past how weak she was. It angered me that Adam blamed her for taking the fruit, and her argument was that if he had been a more controlling husband then none of this would have happened. Really Milton, really?
I really enjoyed the final book though, I thought that was very well done. The poem as a whole is fairly easy to follow and a very pleasant read.
