Is it weird to call a book about the survivor of a serial killer joining a true crime completion to find said killers bones a fun read? Because this was a fun read! Very suspenseful and there was a slow rising dread as it went on and you start to get an idea of what’s happening, much like the fog rising up in Cloudkiss Canyon. It was thrilling, fun, and hard to put down once the story got going. It also had different takes on true crime and the “fandom” that has been built up around it from different points of view which I found really interesting. The characters and their constantly shifting dynamic really was what took center stage in this story for me.

what?

No seriously, what?? I don't think this book knew what it wanted to be, and neither did I. I was hyped at the beginning, but very quickly this turned very boring? And repetitive? It just wasn't great and left a bad taste in my mouth.

The way the author/main characters bash all people who listen to true crime rubbed me the wrong way (as I am a person who does listen to true crime podcasts). Like they made no exceptions. The podcast hosts/fans in this book were terrible, and I'm sure that was the point, however they could have specified that they meant that specific podcast. Plus the mystery ended being super anti-climatic and boring. The book felt too long.

This was a bit meh for me. I was entertained. I finished it. I just didn’t love it. I did have an idea of how it was going to end while reading it but there are enough twists that it does make you question yourself a few times. I don’t know what about this book kept me from loving it though. I wish I could pinpoint it. I just know that by the end of it I was glad it was over. I didn’t hate it, I just feel like it missed the mark a bit.
