i felt a bit let down by this book after enjoying the first one. it was suffering badly from seige and storm style second book syndrome (with roën being the nikolai-like charming “privateer” character with all the best scenes and lines). i felt like the plot took forever to get anywhere and i was really bored with the “we need to end the war at any cost” conversation that took place in every chapter without fail.

Not as much of a page-turner as the first book, but still pretty good.

1)Everything is ruined and we're going to die.
2)We must execute this plan, even though it means sacrificing everything that matters to us, because it is the only option.
3) The plan is thwarted/goes wrong.
4)Repeat steps 1-3

This happens about 15 times in this book. It got exhausting. There were only two parts I can think of that offered some sort of break from the nonstop running, fighting, almost dying, actually dying, etc.

I just lost interest in the plot. Want to continue reading in the future...

Okay...
I like this series, it's entertaining. I don't love it. The characters are all so angsty I just ugh.
Spoiler Alright. Zelie is all like, I'm so depressed, I guess it's supposed to be refreshing not to have a character who's like I can fight the whole world, but like Katniss did this too, soooo
Amari. UGH! I kinda hate her. She's all like, I can't believe they won't listen to me, my ideas are the best and I am so smart. She's SO annoying! She's not smart and idiot, they won't listen to you because your ideas are trash and because your family killed all of their families.
Inan, angst angst angst angst angst (that's all I have to say)
Tzain, like what happened to him, was he there until like the last scene? who can be sure?

The ending though, is really where is gets bad. It's all like we're winning! and then it's just like uhh I can't end the series now so haha plot twist out of nowhere theyre on a jail boat haha!

I also don't like this one's cover as much as the first one.

I know this is all super negative, but I did actually like it, ish. It just has a lot of issues. The plot was entertaining, even though it was a bit cliche and magic is always cool. The death scenes were very well done I think but they were sad. I really liked the training magic scenes, because magic is cool. I would say the clans and stuff are creative, except they remind me too much of the Grisha, I mean, Orisha, Grisha, hmmm!?!?!

I really liked the first book, but I just didn't get into this one. The characters were so unlikable that they don't feel realistic. I may try to finish it at some point, but the rest of my TBR was getting impatient.
