The beginning was admittedly slow rolling. And the romance was like a low fence, you could kind of see it but could get to the other side.
The plot twist, and the last 100 or so pages picked up really nicely and brought up the book rating from a low 3 to a low 4.
It’s Peter Pan.
It’s a version of Wendy.
It wasn’t bad, and at least I’m glad the ending was better.
No good beginning and bad ending for this one for sure.

 I cried....

This book was such a good take on Peter Pan and Wendy. It pulled at my heart strings while also give a fairytale character more depth & meaning

unlike almost everyone else in the reviews, i've never read the author's debut novel "cemetery boys", this is the first book i've read by them and wow...the disappointment.

this was such a wattpad-like book in the sense that the main character is underdeveloped, confused all the time, and never acts their age. the story develops so slowly that it gets boring (i almost fell asleep at several parts). peter's character was the only one i liked. it's like a better version than his original character, less selfish and a lot more caring. wendy, on the other hand, was always lost, never knew how she felt abt peter, was always whinging, and her amnesia made everything so much more unbearable. she also never acted like an 18 yr old, either.

another thing that bothered me a bit was the fact that one of the only poc characters was only around for like 5 chapters and the epilogue. i was sorely disappointed when i found out that she wasn't gonna be a part of this big ol' adventure to find peter's shadow and stop the kidnappings from happening. her only purpose in the book was to comfort and confront wendy whenever it was necessary. honestly, wasted potential.

finally (spoiler warning), the whole idea of neverland being this pseudo-heaven that the spirits of children go to........ugh i didn't like it. i really didn't.

it would have been an interesting take......if only it hadn't existed on the internet for like more than a decade now. like who hasn't seen that whole "peter pan is an angel who takes children who died to neverland" theory floating around the internet? anyone on the internet in the early 2010s knows abt those crazy (dark) disney theories, like c'mon. (that's honestly another reason why this felt so wattpad-y).

anyway, yeah. i hoped that the negative reviews would have been proved wrong, especially considering that this is a peter pan retelling. sadly, it didn't do the source material justice.

This book had a lot of potential but took its story is a weird and unpleasant direction. The concept of a modern Wendy dealing with trauma and repressed memories mixed with a fantastical true-crime-esque story was good, and I enjoyed how vivid the woods were described. However, the writing was really repetitive, oddly stiff and distant. Most characters felt really flat and one-dimensional, and the majority of the mysteries would have been solved if Peter had been more upfront with Wendy.
The most unpleasant element of this book by far is the relationship between Wendy and Peter. Peter, while a timeless supernatural being, starts the book looking like a young teenager and rapidly ages visually to be roughly 18. Wendy turns 18 on the first day of the book, and having her oogle Peter so much throughout the book felt gross. Can we leave romances with youthful looking supernatural beings in the past, please?
