This book is as famous and critically praised as a first hand account of WW2 U-boat warfare, as "All quiet on the Western front" is as for its depiction of WW1 trench warfare.
After watching the claustrophobic movie adaptation from 1981 a dozen times as a teenager, I always wanted to read the German language original of the classic WW2 naval warfare novel.
Needless to say, every paragraph of this book is abundant of military abbreviations, u-boat terminology and slang. So without a fresh memory of the movie version, some years of German lessons at school would not be sufficient for following the plot.

I think it's important to know: this book was not made to entertain.

Knowing this, you can go in an read 200 pages of water description and submarine tech. It's is realisistic. And war included a lot of waiting. Followed by waiting while fearing for your life. Followed by cynical and dark problematic jokes of soldiers.
That being said you also need to consider when this book was written and when the (fictionalized real events) took place. The autho  is biased and problematic and lived through war.

The book has its place as a realistic report of WW2's submarine war. And for Captain Kaleun.
