This is not generally a book I would find myself drawn to, but I ended up loving it! I tend to really it when middle grade books have a creepy vibe. The only thing that bothered me was one of the characters being described as ugly because he has acne. As a girl who has STRUGGLED big time with acne I was kinda like mmmm no that's not cool. BUT, other than that one issue, I really did enjoy this book.

Creepy book about some orphans, a tree, stories, getting your deepest desires granted, but for a cost.

Not anything groundbreaking, but it was a pleasantly enjoyable read.

This book was genuinely creepy, which I appreciated. I was expecting the Night Gardener himself to be misunderstood and for the kids to help him, but no, he was actually just a scary, evil dude. This was a nice departure from a lot of children's literature, so yay. I would have liked more backstory on just about everyone, but I don't think that will prevent kids from enjoying it.

When it comes to children’s books (which, granted I’ve always gravitated more to YA so my first hand experience with this genre isn’t as robust as others), I ask myself one thing: was I entertained?

No, I wasn’t. This is a morality tale cloaked in a children’s book. It tries too hard to be Coraline and ended up missing the mark for me.
