A very interesting book, a different kind of story than I expected, but definitely not in a bad way. I enjoyed following the characters in a chapter of their lives. The ending was done in a very different way than I am used to, but I liked it a lot, it gives closure. It was interesting to see where each of their paths took them and why they made the decisions they did.

SpoilerI also very much liked Marin and Danica finding each other again at the end, I really like their dynamic. I am curious about the secong meeting of Danica and Neven, too bad we didn't get that, but I suppose I can probably infer what happened and spelling it out might not have added anything

Offically a convert to Guy Gavriel Kay after reading my first book of his. This follow up didn't dissapoint. It's set in the same breathtaking world as A Brightness Long Ago (reading order wise I found they flowed on well from each other) which has strong inspirations from the old empires of the west and middle east. Kay has a rich easy to read style that's the written equivalent of rolling around in velvet. He imparts description and wry remarks without ever being dull, and has many insightful lines on human nature. The characters meet and diverge in masterful ways and all the threads of the story come together to ripple through history. It's full of small pebbles changing currents and the fates of empires, I found small everyday characters having lasting impacts very satisfying. Would certainly recommend it, although it is long and a tad dense, so you're gonna want to set aside a solid chunk of time to devote to this beast.

Among the best novels I've ever read. Lyrical, a profoundly compassionate glimpse into the whimsy and wonder of the mess of existence. Deeply honours the delicate grasp between life and the unknown.

Really loved all the cultural references. Very vivid imagery and lively characters.
