This was well written and I really enjoyed it. I think with a longer page count would have helped make it a more well rounded story, but for a novella it was pretty good. It was sweet, just needed more emotions/character development.

The angel and her magic have made it to WWII and a soldier's rucksack. Most of the story takes place just after the war and revolves around childhood friends, Roger and Jack. With only the one heated kiss before Jack leaves for college, the pair promise to see each other at Christmas. Of course, the war changes that, and it's six years before these two see each other again. The author does an impressive job with the balance between the whimsy and magic of the angel and the reality of post war life for a soldier while also giving us the angst of a forbidden romance. Both Jack and Roger are likable characters and their feelings for each other do come through loud and clear. This is a novella, so things wrap up quickly, but it still manages to be a well-rounded romance, and the angel adds the perfect touch of Christmas magic.

Can't tell the leads apart

Sweet little story in an amazing series. But this particular story is weaker than the others in the series as the two main characters are indistinguishable from one another.

Not bad, but nothing special. Jack and Roger are interchangeable—so much so that even the author can't always seem to tell them apart and mixes up their names several times—with nothing about their thoughts, feelings, mannerisms, etc. to differentiate them. I suspect the story would've worked better if it had stayed in one PoV instead of alternating.

I read the first one in this series and loved it, so had to give this one a try. This one is set right after WW2 finish3d in 1945, but the prolouge is set 6 years eairler. You see the connection between Jack and Roger straight away, you just want them to find their way to be together. The pair is reunited after the war and both have grown so much. War has taken it's toll on both men and we get to see how hard it was for both. They did grown while away at war and both have a brief relationship with a man. You see that what other expect if them is dragging them down and how hard it is to live your true self then. Jack was my favourite out of the to and I just wanted to give him a big hug. I like how the angel came into this and in such a sweet way. It really gave Roger hope and comfort during the war. It is still working it's magic in bringing true love to those who need it. The ending was really sweet and I liked how they resolved to make it happen. Loved the epilogue, so glad it was set 5 years in the future. This book shows us how time have really changed and I'm so happy for it. I wish this book could of been longer and can't wait to see what magic the angel will grant next!

A very emotive short story
Not only are Jack and Roger just discovering their life long friendship has moved to more in a time when men being with each other is not accepted, WW2 then means that their separation is much longer.
Both Jack and Roger have found kindred souls for short periods whilst posted away and the fragility and furtiveness of these trysts do come across.
Most of the story happens once war is over and the men meet again - and still the matchmaking mothers continue! Gah, they annoyed me and I’m not there - different times.
Despite getting together they still feel they have to be apart which is heartbreaking - though once they realise they could be roommates I did find their realisation of the two old men amusing!
Lovely addition in the series.

Every time I read a historical romance set in a period of war I want to just wrap my arms around the men who served but couldn't be open about their sexuality.

How many of them lost a loved one they couldn't openly mourn, like both Jack and Roger do here, and how many went to their deaths knowing their loved ones would suffer in silence.

Lori embeds this romance not only with that sense of loss, but also acknowledges those sacrifices with the characters of Floyd and Oskar, off page but important in the journey these men take back to each other.

This ends at the start of the 1950s and there was still a way to go, but the Epilogue felt completely believable to me - a happy Jack and Roger living their best lives under the radar as two war damaged bachelors.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Wow, this was really heavy compared the the previous books. Really angsty and heartbreaking, but still with an HEA. My only complaint is that sometimes I got the characters mixed up.

There may have been issues with my copy as two of the chapters contained some head hopping which I found confusing. Enjoyable nonetheless.
