I was so invested and entertained by this book start to finish. It reminded me so much of the kinds of Dark Gritty crime movies and TV shows I like to watch. Plus I really enjoyed uncovering the mystery with our main character Virgil. It’s been a minute since I read something like this but it really reminded me of Roadhouse (which is one of the best movies ever lol) I dunno if these types of books are my thing but this one 100% worked for me and I loved.

Through an intense fictional mystery, this powerful book also takes you into key issues 21st century Indigenous people face - from drugs to tribal politics to federal inaction to local crime to quality of food and so much more. But it also shows the power of cultural persistence and Native identity in contemporary life. The author's writing sears you with its cutting truths about the Rosebud Reservation, even while writing fiction.

The level of violence and heavy content reminded me a lot of Razorblade Tears, so please look into content warnings if you struggle with violence or tough topics.

What a great book! I loved the intricate story and character development. It was interesting learning some Lakota history, and I look forward to learning more. I appreciated the author’s note at the end - don’t skip it! I sure hope there’s a sequel!
