I read this despite not liking Vol. 1 of the comics, and I regret it. The story was extremely rushed and poorly thought out, the original villain had no reason or purpose, the night games were extremely rushed and the challenges were simple and seemingly very easily completed, and the characters all remained 2D as in the first comic.
I really wanted to like these, as I really enjoyed the Shades of Magic series and was excited to see the world and the magic in visual format, but the comics are just so bad - especially when compared with the books. Vol. 3 isn't available as an ebook at my library, and unfortunately I won't be making an effort to seek it out elsewhere and complete this series. Also I continue to dislike the art style, it hasn't grown on me at all from the first volume.

Oh, this was absolutely delightful — even better than the first volume! If you know me, you probably know already that I'm a massive sucker for tournaments, trials, etc., and learning that the infamous Night of Knives is a set of trials custom-built for that contestant? Sign me the hell up. (Sign me up for reading about it, not, y'know, participating. Just to be clear.)

I'm so thoroughly enjoying this time of getting to know Maxim better and learning how he was shaped into the proud and powerful King we know from the Shades novels, and now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go devour the final volume in this trilogy.

✨ Representation: the members of the Maresh family are Black; multiple BIPOC side characters; one on-page sapphic side character
