This book was creepy and left me wondering what would happen next without being super scary. If you're looking to read indigenous horror, I highly recommend this book.

I liked this book pretty well until the second to last chapter, which involved a bunch of disgusting body horror. I’m not a fan of gore at the best of times, but I was listening to this audiobook while making my dinner, which…left a bad taste in my mouth.

Besides that, I did enjoy the family and friend dynamics that this book contained. I especially enjoyed the aspects of the book that functioned as more of a supernatural mystery than as gruesome body horror. Fortunately, that *was* the majority of the book.

A slow build that I couldn’t put down, as the tension swept me up. A glimpse into a home where family members care for each other amid grief and the trauma of an attack on a loved one. It’s filled with nightmares, mystery, and a touch of the eerie, yet it remains undeniably beautiful.

I have never been one to get emotional over books. Except maybe the Vampire Diaries like a decade ago (don’t ask, I don’t remember much). But Jessica Johns has such a gift for writing grief and connection- human connection, connections of the natural world- that you can’t help but feel emotional for this family. 10/10 I’ll be on the lookout for the next Johns piece.

Jessica John'sis truly an amazing writer. The way she is able to build a scene and transport the reader is really cool. I could relate to closely to many of the scenes she described (like the aunties all playing cards) and I felt like I literally had to snap out of it when the book continued on because I was so deeply transported back in my memories by the writing.

The book takes a little while to pick up, but when it does you're really in it. I thought the ending was really touching. Definitely reccomend. This book is worth the hype.
