American King picks up right where American Prince left off. I feel like this is the spiciest of them all with all full on steamy scene basically in ever chapter. I really like how the series came together at the end and the connection they spoke about to King Arthur.

Read if you like:
-MFM erotica
-Love triangle
-Political setting
-Forbidden love

A little let down by the end to this series. While it gives a happy ending it doesn’t feel satisfying. The mythology is stronger in this book which feels forced and there is an increase in the not only good man messaging to the mythical hero messaging. The writing is good and I was invested from the previous two books but would have liked a more consistent vibe to finish.

I mentioned in a Facebook group a while back that I'd read the first two books in Sierra Simone's New Camelot trilogy and stalled on reading the last one because I just could. not. But someone responded saying it was worth it to see it through, so when I saw the whole trilogy is currently included with my Audible membership I snapped it up.

I just finished American Prince, and I'm remembering why I couldn't go on to King. My heart, y'all. It hurts for these three. Sierra Simone's writing is exquisite and (even with a less-than-ideal male narrator) really drives home all the pain the MC's go through. Just...UGH. So I'm going on to American King with my heart in my throat and hoping they don't hurt each other too badly before the end.

Eta 11/16/23am:

So this series ended up being just as heart-wrenching as I expected, though the trio didn't hurt each other as much as/the way I expected. The political intrigue aspect ended up being interesting, but not as deep as I'd thought it might turn out. The female antagonist is one of the most loathsome and sad that I've ever read. I hated her by the end and was fucking glad she got the ending she did (
walked into a river and never came out
). She was pretty obviously coded as someone with mental health problems (mom appears to have been bipolar, though it's never stated outright), and I'm not sure how I feel about that. Kinda gives me the ick, since they
might've avoided a lot of heartache if she'd just gotten a lot of therapy and medication
. Also,
fake out death at the end
, which I'm not a fan of, but it was at least telegraphed kind of, and served an actual purpose.
The story skips Embry's entire term in office to jump to the angry-tearful reunion, and the HEA where Ash has to stay hidden forever to protect his heroic legacy, they all live on a farm with horses, have kids, and all the kinky sexy time they could wish for in their fancy basement dungeon.

Ultimately, the denouement, while fine, felt a little thin,
with the time skip
, and just kind of tells us what happened without us actually getting to see any of it.
Greer and Embry got married early into his term, and don't find out Ash is alive until a year later because "they needed that time for themselves," which, okay I guess, but still. Asshole move, seriously. Also, I wasn't sure if she was gonna do it, but Simone went whole-hog with the Arthurian aspect at the end,  and made Ash the literal reincarnation of Arthur! And Merlin, Greer/Gwenivere. Embry was a kind of muddled Lancelot/Mordred I guess?

The way Sierra will have you horny and then heartbroken all in the paragraph is truly masterful.

This series is definitely worth the hype

This is going to be short, I want you to experience this goodness for yourself and plus, I’m trying my hardest to keep everything spoiler free.

You’ve read/ listened to American Queen and American Prince already? Yes? Good! So, you know how AP ended, that was a jaw-dropping scene, right? All those revelations, poor Ash. And what is going to happen next? Gah! It was too much for me to bear, I couldn’t possibly wait for the audiobook, I had to eyeball the book instead, yes, you read that right, I read a book… with my eyes *gasp* and it was so worth it!

Oh, my word! Just when I thought Sierra Simone couldn’t improve on a story anymore, just when I thought she couldn’t possibly add any more twists she goes and hits it out of left field. Her talent amazes me. If you loved American Queen and American Prince you will adore American King. The story comes to its conclusion so beautifully. It broke me, and it put me back together again. I cried, sobbed even, I laughed, I cheered. I think I experienced every emotion known to a human during this book, it was intense and worth every tear, and every penny.

Ash, Greer, and Embry continue to amaze me with their love. It is incredibly beautiful. The sex scenes are smoking hot, I’m talking melt your kindle type of hot. But they are also important to the storyline, they make perfect sense and cause quite a few swooning moments. Abilene continued to make me mad but also sad, she has issues that required help. Morgan and Merlin finally earned my approval. This book is filled with characters to love and to hate and to love to hate lol. I adored them all for different reasons.

Side-note: If you don’t believe a heart is big enough to love more than one person and don’t believe the message of love is love, this is not the book for you. Some scenes may be difficult to read, if you have any set triggers please give me a shout and I’ll help you with details. Know that each scene has a purpose.
