Re-read
I can see why people don't like the 2nd half but ngl I was just as invested as I was in the 1st half
Spoiler and it provides the needed backstory for the murderer
, although there are better stories later on in the series, I really love how it introduces Sherlock Holmes and Watson's relationship with him plus his making fun of Gregson and Lestrade is a funny highlight that isn't featured as much in the later ones

Almost like two narratives in one somehow. As far as I can recall, though.

I’m a huge fan of Sherlock movies and TV show. So, reading this was an absolute delight. I loved seeing the similarities between a study in pink which was the first episode of the Sherlock Holmes TV show and this book. The backstory of the murder was a nice surprise. I’m really looking forward to reading more of the stories.

I've finally read a Sherlock Holmes book and it was pleasant. Sherlock is an intriguingly quirky character.

The book chronicles how Holmes and Dr. Watson meet through a mutual acquaintance and become house mates. Watson, recently back from war in Afghanistan, is fascinated with Sherlock Holmes and tags along as the latter is investigating a crime. He likens Holmes to a "well-trained foxhound" on a crime scene. Sherlock's good old-fashioned deduction skills are top-notch.

The first half of the book is basically the two men meeting,Sherlock on the crime scene, and his sharing his powers of observation with Watson. The second half completely took me by surprise as it jumps to Utah, yes Utah, (from London) with unfamiliar characters. I kept waiting for Sherlock to show up on the scene. But no, it's the backstory of those involved in the murder. I actually really enjoyed it as it gives the first half better context. It's an unflattering portrayal of Mormons and Brigham Young. Downright creepy, in fact. Some of the negative facets of Mormonism depicted are common knowledge, but it left me wondering how much is true?

In the end we jump back to London for closure to the story. I listened to the audiobook narrated by David Clarke. His British attempt at the American southwestern accent humored me.
