I haven't the faintest idea why the librarians at my library decided to place this in the YA section. It was much more appropriate for 8-12 year-olds, mostly because it was so simple. I didn't think the book gave much information on actually be a "pirate of the revolution," it's just that someone wanted kids to know that privateering existed and helped form our country and so they wrote this book.
For a girl disguising herself as a boy, everything was so convenient that Hannah was "breathing a sigh of relief" every page or so! The Sea Hawk, unlike other ships, doesn't have an out-in-the-open head (privy), so she could have privacy there. She doesn't even have to sleep in the same area as the rest of the crew, she gets her own little space!
One thing is that there isn't much inaccurate sailing knowledge, but that's because it hardly had anything about sailing it in. They glossed over so much, which was fine for the age range, but some of the few things they did mention were incorrect, such as the name of a ship being painted on the side. (Unless it's a really small boat, it's on the stern.)
