Perhaps this book deserves a higher rating, but I almost gave up on it. I could sense the pain of MacDonald's grief and the self-loathing of T.H. White in a way that made the first 1/2 - 2/3 of the book difficult to keep reading. And yet, perhaps that speaks to MacDonald's talent as an author. I stuck with it and am glad I did- it's an incredibly original book.

Liked the nature writing and the ideas, some dazzling bits of writing too, but overall the book didn't absorb me.

Such a beautifully written book. The author moves through the grief of losing her father and ensuing depression by training a goshawk. She draws parallels (or maybe mostly lessons) from the books and life of TH White (author of The Sword and the Stone). A wonderful book about our relationship to the natural world and how we shape it with our stories and history.

I feel like I may have “missed the point” on this one. While the story was interesting, I struggled to connect the T.H. White material…or even the grief-related nuances at that.
I learned more about White than I ever even thought I needed/wanted to know; same with falconry.
Perhaps I’m just not in a mental/emotional place for this to connect, but I feel largely disappointed in the completion.
I seem to have misinterpreted the timeline between some key events; time seemed to stretch “forever” then suddenly be compressed.
Not sad I read it at all, after several recommendations from various sources, but just didn’t enjoy it or find the resonance in it that others seem to have.

Started and finished date - 20.10.24 to 22.10.24.
My rating - Three stars
This boom was boring and dull. Both the atmosphere and the writing was fine but the paced of plot was bit slow for my liking also the cover of book was fine. I didnt like the characters and I feel like they were flash out bit more.
