This supposed “prequel” to The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: California is so disappointing. The established lore of the original series is ignored and changed to the point where the these don’t seem to even be in the same universe. Additionally, the story line is very confusing, with elements of world building that are essential to the plot never being explained, and the character work is boring at best and offensive at worst (transphobic and racist, specifically)
Again, like with most of Way’s comics, the best part about this series is the stunning artwork.

These comics are, to put it lightly, confusing as fuck. They not only contradict previous canon about the setting, but they have confusing time skips, confusing character writing, random plot points that never get resolved, and more. I can’t say that I remember much about these books that would make sense.
It’s also worth pointing out that the only prevalent black character in this book is a violent fighter who dons an animal mask to attack people. There’s some iffy stuff with the trans character in this book, as well as with the two (implied) Latina characters.
All in all, I did not really enjoy this comic. It’s only saving Grace is the amazing art
