This was definitely not a perfect book. I found it really predictable and off-putting how the author Delia Owens really played into the whole ''she's not like other girls'' trope through Kya's character, with her love interest Tate claiming that she's so much better than other girls from his town because they only gossip and ''wear too much make-up" or something. Also the ending was a bit of a let down and loads of major events seemed to be thrown into the mix with not a lot of resolution or genuine emotion from the characters; it felt super rushed. Having said that, I did really enjoy the the atmospheric descriptions of the natural setting and I felt connected to the main character Kya and her friend Jumpin' . Despite the narrative style being quite cliche, cheesy and two dimensional at times, this book was a really easy and addictive read. Something about it felt very cosy and comforting even when the plot took a dark turn- defo a bit of a guilty pleasure.

I had put off reading this because I tend to be let down by the books that have a lot of hype around them, but this was an enjoyable read.

Slow start but picked up pace around half way through.  The author really brought out the pain caused by abandonment and also the prejudices Kya was subject to.

The connection Kya had with the natural world around her was lovely to read.

The protagonist and setting draws you in from the very beginning and with short chapters it feels like a quick read. Although the story jumps back and forth between two different time periods it never felt confusing and got more and more suspensful when they started to connect. I had read somewhere that the author is a zoologist which is very apparent as a lot of the book focuses on describing the wildlife and fauna but it wasn't distracting but instead invited you into the point of view of the main character. While the overall pace felt rather slow it definitely picked up towards the end and while I was worried of being left with many questions, the last handful of pages answered a lot of them and left me just sitting in silence for a moment once I had finished the book.

The emphasis that you're environment shapes you and that it does not diminish your value or intelligence is amazing.  There were times I got confused with the timeline jumping but when it converged it was a fascinating plotline unfolding.

I absolutely love Kya, and the love she has for the marsh. The relationships Kya had transcending social constructs were great and it helped establish the interconnection we all have to each other. Tate was one of my favorite characters and I felt devastated that in the end, he was left alone.

Jag VET att ALLA och deras mammor absolut avgudar den här boken men jag kom inte längre än halvvägs! Stäm mig! Spärra in mig!

The descriptions of nature and the life of the protagonist is really vivid. I felt like I was there. It is difficult content but ultimately about the strength of the human spirit. I really liked the authors writing and the pacing of the first 75% of the novel. The last 25% was definitely interesting but the pacing changes a bit which I didn't love as much.
