When Joey in Friends found The Shining too scary he put it in the freezer. I started reading this book in March of 2021 and by April found it so claustrophobic and troubling that I had to put it down for over a year. On a shelf, not a freezer, but the same principle. Yesterday I picked it up again - a different year, a different headspace - and still found it claustrophobic and troubling, but in all the best ways. I read the whole book in under 24 hours - no freezer this time, just an eager desire to finish this fantastic quartet and read the fourth and final book The Ends, which is already waiting for me in the freezer (or sitting on my shelf).

Ali Becker knows exactly what it’s like - and what it costs - to be gaslit and manipulated by a controlling bully; having escaped the web of lies her ex-husband trapped her, she’s starting to suspect her colleagues aboard the space station researching the Anomaly are keeping secrets from her. This time, she won’t accept it without a fight.
I enjoyed this third act of The Anomaly: more psychological thriller in space, less overt horror this time (although having read the first two books you can fill in the gaps with a shudder, knowing more than the narrator about what is likely going on).
A good set up for the final act, and a rather more sympathetic narrator than I’m used to from this series!
