"I also know how they will tell this story. It is the same for any woman who defies their place in this world. Jason will be the hero, and you? They'll either make you his adoring, lovesick damsel or they'll make you the villain. Those are the only roles they feel comfortable with us occupying."

I couldn't put it down!!

This is not an easy story to tell, if you know anything about Medea, it would most surely be the "witch" part of her story (even though she prefers "sorceress"

Honestly, the only reason I listened to this much is because I had an excruciatingly long drive and an audiobook was the perfect background for it. Unfortunately, I just lost interest. This didn't hold my attention.

I read this fabulous, magical, spellbinding, huge book in just two days. That’s how good it is!

Hewlett previously wrote a short novel about Medusa, which was one of the best retellings of her story I’ve ever read. I knew I had to get my hands on her story of Medea the second it was published!

Hewlett’s standard writing style shines with the likes of Madeline Miller and Costanza Casati here. She tells Medea’s story brilliantly, lending neither bias nor gentleness to her story. The complex, heart wrenching, gory, magical truth, and I could not get enough.

Medea’s story is a rollercoaster, and for centuries has left people divided on what her role in history will be. For me personally, Hewlett finally paid her story homage by gripping its beauty and ugliness firm and allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions.

One of the best books I’ve read this year. Cannot wait to read more from her.

5⭐ without a doubt

I absolutely loved The Witch of Colchis by Rosie Hewlett! The first thing that drew me in was the theme, which reminded me of Circe by Madeline Miller. If you're a fan of Greek mythology, strong female protagonists, and retellings from the perspective of the oft-misunderstood "villains," this book is a must-read.

The audiobook, in particular, is a masterpiece. The narrator’s voice is enchanting—she truly brings Medea to life with a voice that captures her complexity, strength, and vulnerability. Each character felt distinct and alive, making the listening experience fully immersive. Her delivery added an extra layer of depth to the story, making it easy to lose myself in Medea's world.

The story itself is a beautiful, multifaceted portrayal of Medea, often villainized in traditional myths, but given a fresh, empathetic perspective here. Hewlett skillfully delves into Medea’s motivations, emotions, and inner struggles, and by the end, I found myself rooting for her in ways I hadn’t expected.

If you're drawn to Greek mythology or enjoyed Circe, you'll find this book just as captivating. Rosie Hewlett does an excellent job of balancing the familiar with the new, offering both fans of mythology and newcomers a thrilling, emotional, and thought-provoking tale.

Highly recommend!
