Extraordinarily helpful book for anyone interested in children's literature! I have my library's copy and immediately bought one of my own after finishing it.

A great textbook for those who have never read a children's book. For those with kids, it is kind of lacking.

Excellent book for anyone who has a responsibility to reviewing and recommending books for children. I found it a great refresher of my graduate courses and the format of the book's presentation of the information was clear and concise. Highly recommended-

Some useful and intriguing information about the many genres of children's book and how to evaluate them, but there was also a lot of dead weight. If you were expecting a book about literary interpretation/criticism, that is not the focus of this book. However, when it comes to an overview to books as a whole and it reviewing children's books, this is a good, general starter.

This was the textbook for my "Resources for Children" class (MLIS). It had some good points and advice for how to review children's books - what to look for and criteria to use for judging different genres, etc. But, it also had too much extraneous information about what the different parts of a book are and too many examples (felt like fluff filler) without enough criteria. At least is was cheap and it was easy to read; those are rare qualities in a textbook. :-)

Read for LBSC 647: Children's Services in the Public Library. An indispensable reference for children's literature; it really helped me get caught up with terms and concepts in children's literature for my class, given my lack of background with children's services. I only wish I had time to read all the fabulous-sounding books Horning referenced!
