As an Anna Olson fan, I was thrilled to be given an eARC of this cookbook from Net Galley and Penguin Random House Canada in exchange for an honest review.

This cookbook was pitched as “the baking bible every baking enthusiast needs to own” and I couldn’t agree more!

In addition to classic baked goods (along with some very unique recipes), this book provides a comprehensive learning experience about ingredients, substitutions, and techniques.

I can’t wait to try the London Fog Madeleines, Lemon Crunch & Cream Tray Cake, and Apple Cinnamon Pull-apart Bread to name a few of the recipes that caught my attention.

This book seems like the perfect guide for bakers looking to improve their skills and learn more about the science behind baking.

This really is a complete guide to baking. It goes over basic baking equipment, ingredients, procedures, and how to fix common mistakes. But it also bring in some more advanced skills to expand and challenge your baking repertoire. A really nice feature is the “recipes at a glance” before each section. It allows you to quickly peruse which recipes are in that section along with a photo. Each recipe shows you the complexity level, size and servings, prep and cook time, and “bites of wisdom”. This is particularly useful because it gives you the page numbers of certain baking techniques you’ll need for that recipe. The book itself is very well aid out and organized and I can’t wait to try out the recipes!

I was given a free eARC copy of this book on NetGalley from Penguin Random House Canada in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve always enjoyed Anna Olson‘s cookbooks because she has a knack for making all of her recipes just seem easy. What I especially liked about this book was the beginning. It’s the perfect resource for a new or experience baker because it breaks down a lot of the baking basics. I feel like most cookbooks have the “what should be in your pantry”, and this book does have that. But it also has explanations and science behind the basics and simple recipes that can be added or can be enjoyed on their own. Not that I didn’t love the entire book but I think the beginning is the perfect resource for anyone to keep on the shelf.

The book is separated into different types of baked goods and at the start of each is a quick reference for what’s going to be included. It also labels the recipes from easy to hard. The pictures are simple and look delicious and I like the added touches that she adds to each recipe.

This book is definitely going to be a staple on my shelf and I’ve already highlighted quite a few recipes that I want to try. I especially like that Anna Olson explained how Canadian ingredients compare to other country’s ingredients so that we’re able to more accurately adjust. As a fellow Canadian, I don’t think I realized this, so that was a nice added touch.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the opportunity to read this book. All opinions are my own.

I really loved this baking book! I would definitely describe myself as a beginner level baker or maybe a step above. So baking books can be a bit daunting and often I have to google what certain terms mean in a recipe. But with this book the first third of it is basically baking 101. It guides you through all the steps and techniques that you’ll need for the different recipes in the book. And my god, all the recipes sound and look amazing!

To test some of these recipes out, I decided to have a mother-daughter baking day with my mom. We decided we could probably do three recipes in a day but narrowing it down to three was a bit hard as there were so many we wanted to try! One of the great features of the book was it tells you how intricate the recipes are (simple/more involved/complex) which helped narrow it down for us.

We ended up going with The Hot Crossed Muffins, Jasmine Tea Bavarian Cream Pots, and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars. And all of them turned out great. My favourite was the cookie bars. They were so soft and chewy; and the recipe was a breeze to follow. They’ve definitely replaced my old cookie recipe!

The cream pots were delicious but very rich. They’d make the perfect dessert for a dinner party or at a high tea. I made mine in teacups which made a beautiful presentation for them and matched the tea theme.

And the muffins had a beautiful spice blend that went nicely with the mixture of raisins and dried cranberries. I couldn’t find any candied orange but I added a bit of orange zest to them which worked out well. These were the perfect breakfast treat and I’ll definitely bake them all year long.

I highly recommend adding this baking book to your shelf. I’ll definitely be adding it to mine!

Thanks Penguin Random House Canada and NetGalley for ARC.

I have been following Anna Olsen for quite a while, watched all of the Sugar episodes (and reruns, and reruns of reruns), same with Bake with Anna Olsen, and Fresh with Anna Olsen, plus many other baking shows where she's a judge, and many, many more baking shows. I'm a fan of the craft, and I can say it all started with her. I'm not a big baker, but I do love baking, and watching all of these shows, I did learn a lot of things. The first part of this book is a great compendium of all of these things, a great reference to go back to when you don't remember, or to get your baking journey started! The second part compiles recipes all more mouthwatering than the next, from the basics to the staples, all of them including interesting notes and tips. And the pictures are absolutely georgeous! I can't wait to get baking!
I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Anna Olson has been one of my favourite TV chefs for years. Some of her recipes from her past shows and cookbooks have become staples in my house. She can make fairly simple recipes become something special and oh so delicious.

For the sake of reviewing this particular cookbook, I found a few of the simplest and fastest recipes to try.

I made the Classic English Scones, Creamy Chocolate Pudding, and Chewy Chocolate Cookie Bars.

I’ve been on the hunt for a really good English scone recipe for a long time  and this one was easy to follow, fast to make, and unbelievably delicious. I’ve found the scone recipe I’ll be making for years to come.

I’ve never made pudding from scratch before so this one was a bit more challenging for my skill level but the results were outstanding! No more boxed powdered pudding for me.

Anna’s classic chocolate chip cookie recipe from her TV show “Sugar” has been my go-to (and often requested) chocolate chip cookie recipe. These delicious bars are just as good and a lot faster to bake up. On lazier days that I want cookies, I’ll definitely be making these.

Overall, this cookbook seems excellent. Her tips and methods are well-worded and easy to understand. Anna has always been a fantastic teacher when it comes to baking, and this book highlights her talent at instructing bakers to be the best they can be.

I’m really looking forward to trying more recipes soon!
