Ice cold soul, lukewarm heart ... sorta!
In the opening salvo of a series mildly reminiscent of TV's Dexter, BR Stateham has told us of the genesis of a cold-hearted and utterly ruthless killer who, despite his clearly psychopathic proclivities, has his heart and his motives at least in the vicinity of the "right place". If that sounds completely cryptic, then all I can suggest is that you give CALL ME SMITTY a test whirl yourself. It isn't police procedural, for sure. Nor is it typical suspense fiction. And while it can't lay claim to being challenging or literary, the episodes are short, snappy and entertaining.
My sole query is, when that switch was turned and he suggested to his erstwhile wife, "Call me Smitty", just where did the skill set of a near perfect assassin come from. My personal tastes only, of course, but a little back story and some more in-depth character development is needed.
Recommended as an enjoyable high speed diversion.
