This should be required reading by all MN kiddos in school. We heard about it, but never truly understood the devastation of what these early pioneers to Mn truly endured.

Horrific and interesting — so much detail, I’m amazed at the work and time research like this would take

I grew up in Minnesota, and am a recreation major, so I knew the story of the Hinckley fire. But I read this book expecting the author to explain how the fires in Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin changed how we predict weather, and if any methods we gleaned from the fires taught us about how to prevent fires. He did not. I was disappointed because it was advertised on the back of the book.

Excellently researched and an amazing minute-by-minute account of the fire that devastated Hinckley, Minnesota, and several surrounding towns in 1894. Highly recommend for anyone interested in forest fires, survivor stories, railroads or Midwest U.S. history. I visited the Hinckley Fire Museum and monument as a child and remember the vivid murals depicting those escaping on trains and taking refuge in standing water. But I had no idea of the scope, magnitude or speed of the fire until reading this book.

An insightful and at times bone-chilling look into a disaster that I'd certainly never even heard of until I came across this book browsing through Daniel James Brown's works (as I loved Boys in the Boat and had already read his superb Donner Party narrative). Goes into informative but also excruciating detail about how weather systems can affect fire spread, as well as the mechanisms of fire injury and how Hinckley as a whole was never quite the same after the fire. Very much a worthwhile read.

Warning: Extremely graphic and viscerally emotional. I imagine that books like these are not easy to research and write. It was certainly not easy to read. However, it is necessary, or else how would we know about the tragic deaths and harrowing ordeals of the survivors? I appreciate the scientific approach and detailed descriptions therein.
